The Fitting BenchGrip · weight · balance
A squash frame is chosen, not merely bought. Three measures decide how one plays in the hand — the grip you hold, the weight you swing, and the balance that sets a frame’s temperament. Read the chart below against your own game, and when in doubt, write to the desk.
| Your Profile | Grip Size | Frame Weight | Balance | A Frame to Try |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newcomer & junior | Grip 0–1 | 130g | Even | Dunlop Sonic Core Lite |
| Improving club player | Grip 1 | 120–130g | Even | HEAD Speed 120 |
| Attacking, wristy game | Grip 1 | 130g | Head-light | Harrow Vapor Misfit |
| Accomplished all-courter | Grip 1–2 | 120g | Even–head | Sonic Core Evolution 120 |
| Advanced & tour | Grip 2 | 125g | Head-heavy | Tecnifibre Carboflex 125 X-Top |
Reading Grip Size
- Grip 0 — the slimmest hold, for a lighter, wristier game
- Grip 1 — the house standard; suits most members
- Grip 2 — a fuller hold for larger hands or a firmer grip
- When in doubt, size down — an overgrip is easily added, never subtracted
How to Measure the Hand
- Hold the frame as you would to strike; there should be a finger’s width between fingertips and palm
- Fingers crowding the palm? Move up a grip
- A gap you could lose a coin in? Move down, or add an overgrip
Reading Weight
- 120g — a lively, quick frame that rewards a fast hand
- 125g — the tour compromise: control with real drive
- 130g — more forgiving and stable, kinder to the arm
Reading Balance
- Head-light — nimble at the front, quick to manoeuvre
- Even — the versatile middle ground, forgiving and neutral
- Head-heavy — penetrating length and power, for a grooved swing
